STOLEN HUGE GOLDEN MAPLE LEAF COIN

It doesn't happen often, but I'm one of the first to know when a coin story goes viral: my inbox fills up with emails from around the world sharing multiple versions of a new story. The reason for the influx this week was the theft of the "Big Maple Leaf" gold coin from the Bode Museum in Berlin. Most readers have already heard the news, but here are some of the best articles I've seen in the news. -Editor

According to recent reports, German investigators believe it took the thieves just about 25 minutes earlier this week to get their hands on a 100-kilogram pure gold coin.

Created in 2007 by the Royal Canadian Mint, the coin named Big Maple Leaf had been on display at the Bode Museum in Berlin since 2010 and was stolen around 3:30 a.m. local time on Monday. Police said it appears the thieves entered the museum via the city's tram tracks, which were closed at the time. With a ladder, the thieves closed the gap between the rails and a museum window, which they opened.

No mention was made of how the thieves had escaped the museum's security system.

After the bulletproof glass broke, the thieves (police suspect more than one person was involved due to the size of the coin) exited the museum the same way they entered. The coin was then moved along the tracks to Hackescher Markt, a popular marketplace in the city, and then lowered to the ground using a pulley system.

"This is definitely a case in which there is a lot of criminal energy," said Bernhard Weisser, director of the coin cabinet in the Bode Museum, according to the Canadian newspaper "The".balloon and mailhow do you say

While the coin has a face value of $1 million, the coin is worth about $4 million at current prices, as gold cost about $1,245 an ounce as of Thursday. Gold prices have fallen more than 1% since the coin was first stolen; on the same day, prices reached a monthly high.

Researchers hope the coin will melt so it can be sold and transported more easily.

"Based on the information we have so far, we assume that the thief, maybe thieves, opened a window in the back of the museum next to the train tracks," said police spokeswoman Winfrid Wenzel of the Reuters news agency. "Then they managed to get into the building and went to the coin exhibition."

"The coin was protected inside the building with bulletproof glass. That's all I can say," he added, but declined to provide any information about the security staff or the alarm system.

In the last issue I was pleased that there was no bad news on the way and urged you to ask your colleagues in the daily press about such publications. Now, for a change, the daily press, not only in Germany but worldwide, is reporting in great detail on an incident that is worrying the numismatic community. And of course the incident is sad. The theft of the Big Maple Leaf from the Bode Museum in Berlin made headlines and even earned scorn and ridicule.

In the end, the thieves seemed to have an easy time: all they needed was a ladder, rope and a wheelbarrow to steal €3.7 million in gold. However, the truth is that many things that seem so simple were actually carefully planned. Investigating further, we must take into account that the security systems of the coin cabinet in Berlin have been in operation for decades and even centuries (read our Related News #1).

Hopefully the coin will be issued again soon. Unfortunately, it was probably the only one of the five coins also included in the Guinness Book of World Records that was ever publicly displayed and not permanently kept in a vault. We hope that the Berlin Coin Cabinet and its visitors will bring this attraction back soon!

Since Monday, the 19 houses of the Berlin State Museums have tightened security even further. How the thieves managed to get past the security systems is still unclear. The Director General of the Berlin State Museums, Michael Eissenhauer, announced in an official statement: "We are shocked that thieves got past our security systems, which we have been successfully using to protect our objects for many years." The thieves went with enormous criminal energy and brutality. At least in the past few decades, there have been no incidents of this type in the museum community. "A theft of this magnitude is also a challenge for the Berlin police," said a police spokesman.

The coin cabinet team is shocked and stunned. Nobody would have believed that the perpetrators could steal the huge gold coin.

In fact, the director of the coin cabinet, Bernhard Weisser, has to go back as far as 1718 to track down a similar robbery at the coin cabinet in Berlin. The then Castilian and a blacksmith from the royal court had embezzled the collection of Federico Guillermo I on a large scale. They were captured and later dismembered. The present incident raises the question of whether the thieves had inside knowledge. The attack was certainly well planned. “A robbery of this magnitude is not just something that an ordinary person can commit in passing. It requires detailed planning," a police spokesman told the media.

Big Maple Leaf is not for sale. The thieves are probably trying to melt down the loot. However, this is also technically difficult. The police are therefore asking anyone to come forward if they have received large quantities of gold in an unusual shape. Everyday use is less likely, although ironically the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe BVG have already ruled this out. "Due to current events," he said via Twitter that BVG ticket machines do not accept 100-kilo coins. Police then added, also via Twitter: "But you can change any 100kg coin at any local police station."

I hope the coin is found and the thieves caught. In any case, the coin cabinet misses the Big Maple Leaf as an attraction for the young public.
