The Foundation Year provides students with a solid foundation in academic skills and science-related subjects, increasing knowledge and practical skills in preparation for entry to the BSc (Hons) Psychology degree. The course is structured so that all modules from Semester 1 are shared across all Bachelor and Foundation programs in the Business School. Students wishing to change courses at the end of the semester can consult with their parent course and the course director of the course they wish to transfer into. This requires the approval of two teachers and completion of all semester one modules.

The Foundation Year will develop academically confident 'Level 4 Ready' students by providing a supportive Foundation Level learning environment that promotes the development of the theoretical knowledge, academic and practical skills required to successfully study BSc (Hons) Psychology. It introduces students to critical reflection and analysis, problem solving and strategic thinking in a broad context at foundation level.

It will also enhance students' employability by combining professional and academic skills, while providing career support and opportunities for problem-based learning, volunteering and involvement in extra-curricular activities at University and beyond.

What 20 years ago was professional training for future psychologists has now become a model for a modern, flexible examination subject. One of the fastest growing subjects at university level in the UK, and the second most popular (recently surpassing Business Studies), one in 23 graduates held a degree in Psychology last year. As you'd expect from a number like this, psychology jobs themselves are highly competitive, so to have any chance of getting a job you'll need a postgraduate qualification (probably a PhD in most fields, especially clinical psychology) and some relevant work experience. But despite the sheer number of psychology graduates — far outnumbering jobs for psychology majors, which totaled more than 13,800 last year — the degree has a lower-than-average unemployment rate because its graduates are so flexible, And is highly valued by industry, prestige and other sectors of the economy. Wherever there are good jobs in the UK economy, you'll find psychology graduates - no surprise, as the course can help you gain good people skills, excellent grades and data management skills.
